The country of Ghana on the continent of Africa is known for the beautiful colorful fabrics worn by the people there. Middle School Art students got to hear the legend of how Kente cloth was thought to have been inspired by an amazing spider weaver. Then they created their own woven and colorful patterns using colored paper and yarn, embellishing with geometric designs using a black marker. Aren't they gorgeous?

High School Art II & III - Creations in Clay
By Moriah Y. |
The students in Art II & III recently completed a basic study on clay. We learned about clay artist Bruce Sherman who creates whimsical hand-built creations, then we looked at methods of creating with clay, and finally learned some basic clay vocabulary. Because we don't have a kiln at the school right now, we just created our own hand-built creations with air-dry clay. After the clay creations had dried, students painted them with acrylic paint and then we finished with a couple of coats of clear acrylic spray glaze. I was so impressed with their masterpieces! Our Grace Prep High School Art 1 students recently turned in their self-portrait project. This was a daunting assignment for many but it has been fun seeing them step up to the challenge. Here are their first names: Jacob, Joseph, Elias, Emily, Noelle, John H., Nathan, Malachi, Kaylee, Maggie, Brandon, John M. Joel, Connor, and Hope. If you know these students, can you tell who's who? Middle School Art - Symmetrical Drawings based on German Folk Art
Our next country of interest was Germany. Middle School Art students were inspired by our look at German Folk Art which is usually symmetrical and has a motif or theme. They each created their own symmetrical drawing with a motif. It was a challenge to draw symmetrically but I thought their masterpieces turned out "Sehr schön!"
