Students in Art 1 learned about looking at the element of shape within works of art. When we usually look at a work of art, we experience something called "gestalt" which comes from the German word for shape. Gestalt in the art world means "an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts." When we look at a work of art we usually forget that the whole thing is really made up of smaller parts like lines, shapes, values... To practice seeing the parts that make up an object students did a different kind of drawing exercise using one object. They divided their paper into six equal sections and then drew the same object but looking at it six different ways. They also "zoomed" in and drew only parts of their chosen object by focusing on the lines and shapes and values that comprised it. Enjoy looking at what they saw!
