High School Art II/III - Tessellation

In Art II/III recently we learned about M.C. Escher, a Dutch artist who specialized in "impossible spaces", optical illusion art with architectural themes. He also created a lot of artwork with Tessellation, a repeated pattern of flat shapes with no overlaps or gaps. Tessellation is comparable with a tiled surface in a bathroom or kitchen as the repeated shapes fit neatly together.

Students, for their project, created their own special "tile" shape to repeat. Enjoy seeing their creations below!

This is my tessellation project! I chose to create puzzle pieces because of a video I saw on Instagram. The colors are because I wanted to make the drawing interesting. But the squiggles aren't just random. They fit together with the ones in each piece. If this was a real puzzle, I imagine the corresponding squiggles is how you would piece this together.

"Poke" by Madeline B.

I chose to do a finger pointing because I suspected everyone to do a simple shape. I wanted to do a simple shape but I wanted to do something different. It took a while to think of something different. It took a while to think of something to draw and finally, I thought of a finger pointing and went with it. When I see the finished product, I think of someone poking someone, so that is how I got the name for this project.

I chose to do the triangle because they look nice and simple. I wanted to do simple colors that go well together, pink, blue, and purple. I colored the sides to make each square and triangle pop more.

I chose this shape because I really like water drips. Plus I like to perfect my ability to draw the drips.

I chose this shape because I liked the contrast between the sharp and smooth curves. I chose the colors because I like the color palate.

For this project I decided to draw waves because I love the sea. I used cool tones to go with the watery look because the ocean is cool.

Halfway through I didn't have a pattern so I made jars in a jar.

I drew mountains because I really like scenic views and mountains are some of my favorite things to look at.

In this project I used puzzle pieces for the tessellation. There are eight different colors used.
Some of the puzzle pieces are missing.

This is my tessellation project. I chose a blue and purple color scheme. I did a bunch of squiggly lines because I thought the project was missing something. I did different thicknesses for the lines as well.

The pattern I chose for my artwork is a silhouette that resembles Loki.
I chose black and white as colors to make the gold stand out.

I thought this tessellation project was fun to complete.
I picked the colors that I did because I wanted to make my artwork vibrant.
