HS Art II & III - Bones and Exoskeleton Study

Students in high school Art II & III enjoyed creating a work of art that had to include either bones, exoskeletons, seashells, or endoskeletons. Enjoy seeing what they created below and their artist statements.  (Click on each photo to see more closely.)

For this project I decided to use a pig skull as a mask for the character's design. I had a lot of fun painting this piece and experimenting with different colors. The character in the painting is a design for the Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, and the two skull-like mobs are withers from the game. One of my favorite parts to paint was the fur on his coat and the shading on the skull.

This is a chimpanzee skull. It has a black surrounding. This really shows the holes and caverns inside the skull.

I chose to do a bird skull because I think they look nice. It's easy for me to do things with pencil so I kept it like a sketch. I enjoyed doing this project because it was fun.

I did this drawing of the butterfly in honor of my mom. She loves butterflies and it was just something that fit the theme perfectly. It was honestly a fun piece I enjoyed making.

I chose the vertebrae because it has an interesting shape and structure. I enjoyed the shading of it and the way it looks 3D like. Bones are really cool in the way that they last even after you die just like art.

I chose to draw a human skull because I wanted to do the skull black and white and then add bright colors around it with paint.

For my bones study project I decided to have Jack Skelengton, but with a more realistic look walking toward a bright colorful Christmas snow globe. I chose that idea because I am a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I thought it would be fun and interesting to create a skeleton related artwork that showed wonder and hope instead of darkness and misery. What I enjoyed about this project was the chance to express my love toward Jack Skelengton's character.

I chose to draw in pencil and graphite because bones traditionally do not have much color to them. I got this idea by thinking about items that I could draw and transform into bones and the idea of a bone chair was particularly appealing because points would be easy to define and I could add a 3D element to it more effectively.

I chose the rabbit skull because it looked very interesting. I chose the graphite pencils because that is a medium I don't often do. I wanted to try it out. I enjoy how the graphite turned out. It shaded very well.

I chose to do a more surreal piece this time. The animal skull is the human face and I chose a skull with long horns. I wanted that to be the main focus. That's why I didn't add as many details on the clothes and used muted watercolors.
